Door Gap Recall
Residential Elevators Recalls Home Elevators Due to Child Entrapment Hazard (Recall Alert)
If you have young children in your home (or if your home is visited by or rented to families with young children), you should immediately disable the elevator or block young children’s access to the elevator until the issue is addressed. Young children should never be allowed to use an elevator unattended or to play in or near an elevator.
If you do not have young children in your home (or if your home is not visited by or rented to families with young children), you may continue to operate your elevator until space guards are installed. We urge you to promptly remedy any gaps that may exist behind your landing doors.
Name of Product: Any elevator is at risk for this hazard.
Hazard: Young children can become entrapped in the space between the exterior landing (hoistway) door and the interior elevator car door or gate if there is a hazardous gap and suffer serious injuries or death when the elevator is called to another floor.
Closely follow the instructions below:
See below for instructions on how to measure for space guards to correct any hazardous gap, or watch the measurement video in a new tab.
Measure the left and right sides separately on each floor. Record the smallest number per floor and input into the form below.
Be sure to note the floor on which you conduct the measurements.
The image below will assist you in reading the tape measure.
Once request is submitted, space guards will be provided free of charge and assistance with space guard installation (see installation video in a new tab) will be provided upon request. Space guards will be custom-sized and labeled for each floor of your home elevator.
