3" x 5" Rule for Home Elevators
The 3”x 5” Rule is a code requirement.
Residential Elevators takes pride in ensuring safety in the use of their equipment and as a policy wants to make sure all Builders, Architects, Developers, Owners / Users are aware of and adhere to this National Code. If your elevator is in violation of the ASME ANSI A17.1 Rule 5.3.1.4.2 National Safety Code (aka “3x5” Rule) there are solutions. Please See below two (2) examples that will bring your elevator into compliance. If you have any questions or need assistance please contact an REI Representative.

The running clearance must be between 1/2" and 1-1/4"

The distance between the hoistway face of the landing door or gate and the car door or gate shall not exceed 5 inches (127 mm).

The clearance between the hoistway doors or gates and the hoistway edge of the landing sill shall not exceed 3 inches (76 mm).

Door Baffle

If the clearances are not as the code requires (see above) then there are possible solutions.

Example 1:
A Door Baffle is fitted on the inside of the hoistway door to prevent a large gap between the door and elevator. (see Your REI representative)

Inset Door

Example 2:
  • Create slightly larger door frame opening.
  • Mount door frame inset to prevent a large gap between the door & elevator
  • Allows hoistway door to open more than 90 degrees
  • Finished hoistway door is inset and safe.
